Logistics for Maritime Transport – The Polish Perspective in an International Context

Maritime logistics is one of the key segments of the global transport system, playing a very important role in international trade. Since maritime transport forms the foundation for the shipment of goods between continents, its organization requires precise planning and coordination, including fleet management, selecting appropriate ports, and adhering to international regulations. In this context, Polish transport companies, while operating in a competitive environment, stand out from international players due to their flexibility, adaptation to dynamic market changes, and the growing number of investments in modern technologies.

Maritime Transport as the Foundation of International Logistics

Maritime transport is the most frequently used form of transporting goods over long distances, often intercontinental. It includes the transport of containers, raw materials, finished products, and other cargoes worldwide. Maritime transport is not only the cheapest but also the safest form of transporting goods in large quantities. Its role in global logistics is invaluable, as it is through maritime transport that trade between countries and continents is made possible. According to data from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), maritime transport accounts for about 80% of global cargo transport by volume.

Poland, due to its strategic location in Europe with access to the Baltic Sea, plays a significant role in international maritime transport. The country's seaports, including Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Szczecin, are key points linking Poland with the markets of Western Europe, Scandinavia, and the rest of the world. In recent years, the Polish maritime transport sector has undergone a series of transformations, becoming a more modern and competitive player in the global market. The Polish maritime economy, which encompasses maritime transport, ports, port logistics, and the shipbuilding industry, has gained importance, allowing Polish transport companies to achieve the status of international operators.

The Role of Polish Transport Companies in the Maritime Market

Polish transport companies operating in the maritime sector play an important role in both domestic and international transport. Although Poland does not have a fleet as large as the largest maritime nations like Greece, Japan, or China, Polish shipowners and logistics operators stand out due to the high quality of services, modern fleets, and flexibility in adapting to market demands.

Poland's container fleet, while not one of the largest in the world, is one of the most modern in Europe. Companies such as Polska Żegluga Morska (PŻM) and Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa offer competitive transport services, especially in container and bulk cargo transport. PŻM, being one of the pillars of Polish maritime transport, regularly modernizes its fleet to meet the growing demands of the market and environmental standards, such as reducing emissions and increasing energy efficiency. Additionally, Polish maritime operators introduce innovative logistics solutions, such as intermodal services, which combine maritime transport with land and rail transport, enabling more efficient handling of shipments throughout Europe.

It is also worth emphasizing that Polish transport companies are active in the international maritime logistics market, participating in global supply chains and collaborating with leading industry players such as Maersk, CMA CGM, and MSC. Through such cooperation, Polish carriers gain access to larger markets and can offer comprehensive logistics services, including both maritime transport and all port handling activities, as well as supply chain management. Polish carriers, due to their flexibility and relatively low operational costs, are able to offer competitive prices compared to international transport giants.

Modern Technologies in Maritime Logistics

One of the most important trends influencing the development of maritime logistics is the introduction of modern technologies that allow for the optimization of transport, fleet management, and greater safety and efficiency in operations. The Polish transport industry is becoming increasingly technologically advanced, with Polish companies investing in modern IT systems that allow for the full integration of logistics processes and better customer service.

In maritime logistics, technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, blockchain, and fleet management systems are becoming widely used. IoT, for example, enables real-time monitoring of the condition of goods, ensuring full control over the supply chain and allowing for quick responses to potential problems such as delays or damaged goods. Fleet management systems, based on GPS and telematics, allow real-time tracking of ships' locations, predicting arrival times at ports, or monitoring the technical condition of vessels.

Poland is also investing in modern port infrastructure that enables the handling of larger vessels and increases the efficiency of transshipments. Ports in Gdańsk, Gdynia, and Szczecin are expanding their container terminals and investing in automated loading and unloading systems that reduce waiting times for vessels and speed up logistics processes. In the context of climate change and increasing environmental requirements, Polish shipowners are focusing on ships with a smaller environmental impact, powered by alternative fuels such as LNG or electricity, which is becoming the norm in international maritime shipping.

Polish Seaports as Logistics Centers

Polish seaports play a crucial role in maritime transport logistics, becoming significant points in the supply chain for Central and Eastern Europe. Thanks to the dynamic development of port infrastructure and modernization of terminals, Poland has become one of the most important transport hubs in the region.

The Port of Gdańsk is the largest seaport in Poland and one of the largest in Central Europe. Its strategic location, proximity to the Baltic Sea, and excellent communication with the rest of Europe make it a key point for container transport and cargo transshipment. Through the intensive expansion of container terminals and increasing their capacity, the Port of Gdańsk has become an important logistics center for all of Europe, competing with ports in Hamburg and Rotterdam.

The Port of Gdynia, on the other hand, is particularly important for passenger and cargo transport, with specialized transshipment terminals that handle bulk cargo such as coal or ores. Meanwhile, Szczecin focuses on the development of intermodal transport, integrating maritime transport with land and rail transport. As a result, Poland is able to provide comprehensive logistics services, including both maritime transport and all activities related to cargo transshipment and their further transportation.

Polish Maritime Logistics in the Face of Global Challenges

Maritime transport faces many challenges, both at the global and local levels. On one hand, there is increasing competition in the market, and on the other, there are growing environmental requirements and changing international regulations. The introduction of the Green Deal and IMO 2030 (goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions) forces shipowners to invest in more eco-friendly vessels and adapt to new regulations.

Although Poland is not one of the largest players in the maritime transport market, thanks to appropriate investments, modern port infrastructure, and an increasing number of investments in new technologies, it is becoming an increasingly significant player in this industry. Polish transport companies, utilizing flexibility, innovation, and the integration of maritime transport with other logistics sectors, are able to compete effectively in the international market, offering comprehensive logistics solutions at the highest level.
